REPOST: HALICALLAHANICON 2012 ACCOMMODATIONS [NB: My recent illness has delayed some of the logistics surrounding the HaliCallahanicon. I hope to have the official countdown blog up and running this weekend, which will eliminate the need for reposting this information here periodically. I'm grateful for your patience -- John].My dears, I have made arrangements for a block of rooms at the Esquire Motel here in Bedford, Nova Scotia, for the weekend of July 6-7-8 for the HaliCallahanicon. The folks there know that the majority of folks are likely to want the rooms for Friday and Saturday nights, July 6 & 7, but are at present able to be flexible on both arrival and departure ends -- and I do encourage you to extend your stay at either end if at all possible -- Nova Scotia is a gorgeous province, and even if you confine yourself to the Halifax area there are a great many things to see. I was able to obtain a group rate of CAN$79.00/night for a single queen-size bed and CAN$85.00/night for two double beds. Those are, in other words, the off-season rates even though we will be in-season. HST (15%) and the hotel tax (2%) are on top of that. Rooms are at ground level with almost no steps. There is a pool. The block is being held for us until 15 June. It will of course be helpful for folks to make their reservation sooner rather than later. You should speak with Trudy, the general manager, who is generally available on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays, and Fridays between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Atlantic Time. The phone is (902) 835-3367; toll-free is 1-800- 565-3367. Alternatively, you can e-mail her to make arrangements at the following address: trudy@esquiremotel.ca The block is being held under the name "Barnstead" -- be sure you tell Trudy you are coming for the Barnstead get-together. She will need to take your credit card number in order to hold your reservation -- it won't be charged until the actual dates, and not then if you prefer to pay cash or use a different card. One is required to provide a credit card number upon arrival even if one intends to pay cash. Please also let me know when you've made your reservation, and for what days. It will help me as I work out the various logistics... Here is the motel's website -- it gives more details on the rooms, etc. -- pictures, too: http://www.esquiremotel.ca/index.htmlI eat fairly frequently at the Esquire Restaurant across the road from the motel -- it has great chowders and good, reasonably-priced family fare. My home is about a ten-minute walk from the motel, another reason why I chose it. Much as I would like to have everybody staying with me, my condo just isn't up to it. It is also filled with stairs. It can, however, accommodate a bunch of folks for breakfast/brunch, and for talk and merriment when folks are not otherwise engaged elsewhere -- Anyhow, I hope this is sufficient information for everyone to get the ball rolling. | | Monday, April 23rd, 2012 | | 3:53 pm |
HaliCallahanicon Update -- ACCOMMODATION
My dears, I have just made arrangements for a block of rooms at the Esquire Motel here in Bedford, Nova Scotia, for the weekend of July 6-7-8 for the HaliCallahanicon. Those are, in other words, the off-season rates even though we will be in-season. HST (15%) and the hotel tax (2%) are on top of that. Rooms are at ground level with almost no steps. There is a pool -- although if folks are of a mind to swim my suggestion is to walk up to Paper Mill Lake, weather permitting. The phone is (902) 835-3367; toll-free is 1-800- 565-3367 -- but I'm not sure if that toll-free number is just within Canada, or works for the US, too. I know when I try to use toll-free numbers provided by US firms, not infrequently they don't work across the border. Alternatively, you can e-mail her to make arrangements at the following address: trudy@esquiremotel.ca The block is being held under the name "Barnstead" -- be sure you tell Trudy you are coming for the Barnstead get-together. This isn't just for Canadians -- this is part of the world's space heritage -- don't let what happened to Soviet space history when the USSR collapsed happen to the modest Canadian contribution. If non-Canadians would drop a note to Mr. Harper himself on this subject, perhaps it would make an impact... | | Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 | | 4:35 pm |
